My Review:
The Beast Within is book two in the Mended Souls series and while I loved The Guardian (book one) for its paranormal romance elements, this one scared the crap out of me! It’s a psychological thriller with paranormal elements that continues the story of newly-minted angels Mike and Lucas.
Julie, Mike’s widow, is trying to move past the loss of her husband when she discovers a foot on the beach. The reporter in her says it’s a serial killer but the last thing she needs is more publicity. But Detective Connor, annoyingly handsome and astute, won’t let her leave the crime scene until she gives her name. She does and he recognizes her immediately.
There’s a serial killer on the loose and he’s one sick man. The more Julie investigates it, the closer she get to the truth and the more attention she gets from the killer. Will Connor catch the killer before it’s too late or will the killer be victorious?
Biggar takes a story ripped from current British Columbia headlines and creates one of the scariest thrillers I’ve ever read. She delves into the mind of a serial killer and it’s spot-on. The twisted nature of his view on human life (especially Native women) brought the killer’s point of view front and center for the reader’s enjoyment.
But this is so much more than a psychological thriller. While Julie and Connor are hunting the serial killer, Angels Lucas and Mike have their own cat and mouse game playing out. Mike has taken the one thing that matters to Lucas captive (backstory in book one). Mike’s determined to make Lucas pay. Mike discovers his wife has feelings for Connor which only makes things worse. It’s not until Julie’s life is in danger, that these two angels must work together. A beautiful story of rage, redemption and forgiveness.
Biggar is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors. She ups her game in The Beast Within and it’s a must-read, in my view. Filled with complex storylines, intense emotional scenes, paranormal conflict and an unstoppable killer, The Beast Within would please any suspense/thriller reader.
