Title: Anise (Book 5, The Chimeras)
Author: P.L. Parker
Genre: Science fiction romance
Book Blurb:
For too long, humanity has cowered against the alien invaders known as the Friem. Running. Hiding. Being hunted. Time is running out and the end is near, unless humanity can find a way out.
As humanity gears up for a final confrontation with the Friem, Anise and her half sisters may be their last hope. These women have all been genetically enhanced, making them stronger, faster, with elevated hearing, eyesight, and sense of smell. In addition to this, Anise is a brilliant tech specialist, driven and determined to end the Friems’ domination of the planet by whatever means necessary. When she reverse-engineers an alien cloaking device, it may be just the edge the humans need to go on the offensive.
What Anise doesn’t need right now is a distraction, especially one tearing at the protective wall she’s built around her heart. Love and connections are just too damn painful, but Finn, a newcomer to the compound, doesn’t seem to understand that. He’s too eager to be a part of her carefully guarded life, and he’s the only male she wants to let in. Can she let go of the past and open herself to him? Or will she hide her feelings and take the easy way out?
Excerpt:
Commander Allen’s voice boomed over the intercom. “The outriders stopped a military transport truck on the edge of town. Guy in charge wants to talk to you specifically.”
“Military transport truck?”
“That’s what they said,” Allen’s voice replied.
“I take it they’re not jackers.”
“From what I’ve been told, they don’t appear to be,” Allen said. “Guy said they’re seeking sanctuary, but he won’t say anything more until he’s spoken with you.”
“Where are they now?”
The intercom was silent for several moments and then Allen spoke again. “Outriders are bringing them in. Should be here any minute.”
“Maybe not a good idea,” Reese, Poppy’s husband, said. He was one of the soldiers in full combat gear and didn’t look happy. “Letting them inside. We should meet with them beyond the main gates.”
The huge gates were slowing cranking open.
“Too late now,” Saff groaned. “Be ready.”
Several outriders mounted on ATV’s were the first through the gates. Behind them a single transport truck edged in and drew to a stop as the soldiers circled the vehicle, weapons in readiness. A male figure opened the side door and jumped lightly to the ground. Anise estimated the guy to be six feet tall or so, thin but muscular. Wavy black hair touched his collar, the curling length partially covering his face. His stance exuded wary but unaggressive behavior.
Anise held her breath, waiting.
“Who are you, and what are you doing here? Better answer fast,” Saff snapped out.
The guy stilled for several moments and then he reached up, brushing the errant strands of hair from his face.
The beat of Anise’s heart began thumping erratically. An unexpected rush of warmth heated her nether parts. Her mouth suddenly felt bone dry.
Square jaw, a dimple in his scruffy chin. Black, winged brows on a high, wide forehead. Eyes of a startlingly shade of crystalline blue ice ringed by thick black lashes settled on Saff and then drifted toward Anise. Their gazes locked, frozen, and then the barest whisper of a smile teased his full lips.
His head tilted as though acknowledging her.
“I ask again,” Saff growled, crossing her arms over her chest. “Who are you, and why are you here?”
He cleared his throat. “I need to speak to the one called Saff.”
