"Save my daddy." The child's soft voice whispered across the mist.

Reagan leaned forward, stilling the movement of her porch swing and squinted to see through the deepening haze hovering over the water. Surely, she imagined the whimpers. Perhaps the cries came from a raccoon or the squeak of the pontoon bumpers rubbing against the dock.

There was no way a child could wander this far from civilization. Reagan hadn't seen a soul since she arrived at her cabin retreat, except when she drove into town for groceries. And that's the way she wanted it. She'd searched out the solitude of Hidden Cove, an isolated inlet on Spirit Lake near the mouth of the Chattahoochee with ten miles of forest between her and the closest neighbor. There wasn't even a cell tower close enough to pick up a signal without driving a few miles down the old dirt road that led to her cottage.

Reagan stood, tucking her long blonde hair behind her ears, and listened to the hush of the secluded harbor. She loved this time of the evening, when the sun slipped into the horizon and nocturnal animals scurried through the underbrush. But tonight, an unsettling energy hung in the air shaded in silent stillness.

Goose bumps ran down her arms. She brushed her palms across them and reached for the throw draped over the back of the swing. It wasn't like her to be oversensitive. Nestling back into her seat she tried to relax, but faint weeping broke the quiet, followed by the timid plea.

"Save my daddy."

Tossing the blanket aside, she pushed off of the swing and grabbed the flashlight she'd hung on a nail next to the door. This time, there was no mistaking the child's anguish.

"Where are you?" Reagan crept down the steps, plodding toward the lake and the source of the desperate lament. She gazed across the water shrouded in eerie fog, then toward the twilight sky. A full moon veiled by wispy clouds cast an anomalous glow through the tall trees that dissolved into blackness as it pierced the strange haze cloaking the water. An icy shiver ran down her spine coaxed further by the cool, October air.

She'd been staying in the cabin for almost six weeks now, had lived near water most of her life, but never had she experienced such an unnerving feeling. Flipping on her flashlight, she scanned the path ahead. The familiar lapping of the lake at dusk always calmed her. She basked in its subtle serenity. But the lagoon felt ominous tonight, like an evil presence lurked somewhere beyond the shoreline masked by the murky haze.
