For Dungeons and Demons –

Dungeons and Dragons has never been more immersive than it is with a demon playing Dungeon Master. Halloween is a day of candy, tricks, and parties. For Shawn, Milo, and Jack, Halloween means a spooky game of Dungeons and Dragons. In the woods at the edge of town, they think they’ve found the perfect spot to start their game until estranged classmate, Rhys Rivera, finds them. Until now, he’s never spoken more than a handful of words to the trio. Out of guilt, they let him join in with the hope that he’ll leave soon after. With Rhys as Dungeon Master, the boys don’t know what to expect, but it’s not long before their ruined evening turns to one of horror. Rhys has plans for them, and in the woods, no one can hear them scream.

Excerpt:

SHAWN PLOPPED DOWN to the ground with a heavy heart. It hardly mattered that he was safe now because his mind was still stuck on the danger, the horrors the last twenty minutes had presented him. All he could see was the fear on Milo’s face during those final moments. His thin pale face stretched into a silent scream played in a loop over and over. Shawn couldn’t process what it meant—that Milo was dead.

I have only done God’s will. Rhys’ words bounced around the inside of his head, and all he could do was laugh.

Three dungeons down out of the seven that they had been tasked with, and yet, Shawn didn’t feel like celebrating. He wanted to throw up. The oasis that usually brought him a sense of peace did nothing for him because he was still in his head. In the memory of the first time they’d seen it with Milo right by their side. He’d taken the best of the situation and filled their canteens with the unnaturally clear water from the oasis and restocked his healing supplies with the leaves he’d plucked from the nearby plants.

Footsteps as Jack approached pulled Shawn from his memories. His burly friend had a hint of sorrow in his eyes that made Shawn sure Jack was having the same thoughts as him.

Did it really count as a victory if only two of them made it out?

If you could dress up as anything or anyone this Halloween, what or who would it be and why?

When it comes to Halloween, I’m always more fascinated with the macabre, the scary things. Traditionally, I usually go as some form of undead creature such as a zombie or a vampire. Last year, I went as one of my murdered book characters. I don’t really have any costume ideas in mind for this year though. As long as it’s spooky, I’ll go for it.
