My Review:

 

Ben and Maia are casually dating, that is until her life is threatened. But who bumped off who and why is a mystery Ben will have to solve before he and Maia can move forward. Soc Au Lait Stiff is a romantic mystery set in the heart of New Orleans during Mardi Gras. The world-building and descriptive narration plunge the reader deep into what makes New Orleans so fabulous. The characters are puzzles themselves yet so addictive to read. Get ready for a rollicking good time with Soc Au Lait Stiff.

 

Let’s start with the characters. Ben is a homicide detective and of the Baker clan. Why does this matter? In this series, the Bakers are a family of cops, FBI agents, and other solving crimes units. They represent the good people of New Orleans who take out the bad elements. Ben likes to keep things on the down low, especially when it comes to Maia. But his protectiveness goes into overdrive when she’s in trouble. In classic Mardi Gras style, people are masked and what’s real isn’t. Can he solve what’s happening before it’s too late?

 

I really like Ben. He’s a regular guy who comes from a big family. He’s a hero but understated. He’s got great one-liners and terrific chemistry with Maia.

 

Maia is a heroine with a drawer full of secrets. The more I read, the more open she became. Her fish out of water personality made for excellent reading.

 

Then there’s the wise guys. Three mob families who add comedy and intrigue to the overall story.

 

The writing is humorous with snappy dialogue. The descriptive narration plunges the reader into the story. The romance keeps the story moving while the mystery adds just the right amount of suspense.

 

Brilliant from start to finish, Soc Au Lait Stiff is my favorite book of the series. If you like humor, romance, mystery, characters you can’t get enough of, you’ll want to read this book right now.
