Title: Struggles of Power
Author: Ivette N. Diaz
Genre: YA Dystopian, Dystopian Adventure
Book Blurb:
Thrust into the presidency of the Base after being devastated by betrayal, Symone’s spiral downward of grief and mistrust is eating away at her control of her powers. Unable to hide her inner turmoil, when a new threat presents itself, she struggles to convince the High Council to trust her intuition and act.
As Symone fights to protect her home, she uncovers information suggesting the Elders are hiding corruption within their ranks. With the intel coming from an unlikely source, Symone must decide whether to investigate and risk being imprisoned for treason, or comply in blind obedience and risk the lives of thousands.
A natural force, corruption in leadership, and her past all collide to bring their society to the breaking point, and rock her world. In the battle between good and evil, Symone’s resolve whether to follow her heart, or succumb to her past, will determine if she will save her home and win Trémon back, or be overcome by an evil that devours everything in its wake.
My Review:
Wounded by Tremon’s betrayal, Symone steps into the role of President. She tries to hide her grief at losing her best friend to the enemy, but it eats away at her soul and her powers fluctuate. Can she trust no one? Seeds of doubt grow in her heart. She receives a vision of an impending disaster. She attempts to warn the Elders, but they thwart her at every turn. She vows to protect her people no matter the consequences. When the shocking news of her birth is revealed, the Elders turn on her. Will she become the thing she’s been fighting all this time, or will she forge her own path?
Struggles of Power is a powerful dystopian adventure I thoroughly enjoyed. The descriptive narration compliments the world-building to bring an engrossing dystopian. The world Ivette N. Diaz creates is post-apocalyptic yet familiar. Society is ruled by laws, or else chaos ensues. There are twists and turns to this story that shocked me. But it’s the characters that make Struggles of Power an unforgettable read.
Symone is the heroine in this tale and she’s my favorite character. Her growth over the course of the book is a testament to the author’s writing. Symone is relatable to readers. Sure, she has powers but it’s her fragility which makes her easy to connect with. Her insight into overcoming obstacles is insightful.
There are themes of spirituality layered in the plot, but they are ingrained into the world-building. Every society dating back to the caveman days has a belief system. It guides and helps people see what life is all about. Ivette N. Diaz does an incredible job with the I Am in Struggles of Power. I found it to be inspiring and not at all preachy.
If you’re a fan of Veronica Roth and YA dystopian adventure with diverse characters, you’ll love Struggles of Power.

Author Biography:
Ivette N Diaz is an author of dystopian sci-fi/fantasy novels, an entrepreneur, and a daydreamer who, through the gift of storytelling, hopes to show that there is more to life than just “getting by” and that each person has a unique purpose for their life and a significance worthy of living for.
While not writing, she enjoys reading by an open window while on her circular swivel couch, lounging in the pool to get away from the Florida heat, and dancing to the congas of her Latin culture while in the middle of her living room. She secretly loves Kung-Fu movies and takes daily online kickboxing classes in hopes of one day becoming a true ninja. Her obsession with working out helps to balance her enthusiasm for food, especially gourmet meals prepared by her husband, who is a talented self-taught cook.
You can also find Ivette on her many adventures with her husband and kids, mostly park hopping in Central Florida, while laughing at their antics.
