Excerpt:

Above the voices rushing around us, I heard the sound of a bullet. The woman dropped to the ground. Another hand grabbed my arm, pulling me away from her. I glanced at the black glove on the sleeve of my dress.

“Hurry,” said a voice that made my heart race.

I looked up at the figure who stood a foot above me, dressed entirely in black. He even wore a black mask, but the voice was unmistakable. It was Pade.

He pulled me from the crowded street and onto the sidewalk. “We’ve got to get you somewhere safe.”

“Zap us to the palace,” I said.

“Not yet.” He glanced up and down the street before pulling me into the space between two buildings. It was barely wide enough for us both to stand. “I’m waiting for confirmation the palace is clear.”

“Take off the mask.”

Pade hesitated. “We were monitoring the attack—”

Before he could finish, I snatched the edge of the mask along his neck and forced the black fabric up. I twisted in his arms and raised my lips to meet his. He pushed me away, swore, and then crushed his mouth to mine with a shudder that rocked his entire body. Hungrily, he lifted me as I stretched my arms around his neck. Heat grew in my stomach and sent a burning pulse throughout my body. He forced my lips apart and locked his tongue with mine, sending another burst of fire through my veins.

I held his neck in a death grip as he crushed my back against a metal wall. “Take me away,” I whispered when he released me for a breath.

Pade pulled away and laid his head against my chest. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have… I’ve got to be stronger.”

The ragged breaths coming from his chest matched the fire in mine. I wondered if his words were meant to push me away or to scold himself. “You regret kissing me?”

“No one can see you with me, not like this.” His eyes met mine. “When I’m near you, I can’t think.”

Dread swirled within me. “Stop talking and kiss me again.”

“I only planned to save your life…” He lowered me to the ground and stepped back. Pade tapped his ear and nodded as if listening to instructions of some kind.

With horror, I grabbed his arm. “Did someone hear what we just…”

“The palace is clear.” Pade took my hand. “Time to go home.”

“But the Lucha Noir—”

“Aren’t trying to kill you.” He kissed my forehead. “We’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”

In a flash, I was back on the palace stairs, staring up at the purple door. Pade had saved me, sent me back to my lonely life.

Several of the guards stared in shock as I walked through the entrance. Gordon stood near the doors, talking rapidly to my father. Probably explaining why he’d lost me, but I was in no mood to hear his excuses. Both stared as I walked by.

“I’ll be in my room,” I said, without stopping.

Neither said a word as I walked toward the elevator.
