Excerpt:

We walked silently over to the bar and perched on the stools half hidden in the shadows of the room. Maurice bent over to me and whispered that there was one million dollars sitting on the table. “Have you ever seen this much cash in your life, over one million dollars,“ he asked. As he explained, each hand could be worth anywhere from twenty-five thousand dollars to a hundred thousand dollars. As it was a cash game, the mountain of money dominated the table. Asking you, dear reader: “Can you imagine seeing that amount of money in pound notes piled up on the table right in front of your eyes.” Believe me, it’s an astonishing sight.

My head, already swimming from the champagne and the dream-like quality of the evening, began to whirl. I could never imagine having that much money in the first place, but to gamble that amount was unthinkable. These men belonged to another class: the ultra-rich. They lived in a different world than the rest of us, with different rules.

“They must be crazy rich,” I told Maurice.

“They are helping to make my sister rich,” Maurice replied, studying the game. “Two percent of each pot goes straight to the club. She makes anywhere between £500 and £5000 per hand.”

Sipping another glass of champagne that Maurice had placed into my hand, I couldn’t take my eyes off these men. The tension in the room was like nothing else. Every move they made was deliberate—every yawn, every sigh, every sip of a drink. I was watching something very few people would ever have the chance to see. I turned to Maurice to express this sentiment, but he had vanished.

Looking around the room, I couldn’t see him anywhere and suddenly felt very out of place in this high-roller’s room. Maurice’s presence allowed me to pass into these milieus unquestioned. Once he was gone, I felt exposed as the tire shop kid from Rhode Island that I was. I slipped out and went looking for Maurice. I found him in the casino surrounded, once again, by a crowd engrossed in his roulette streak. I gave him a wave, went back to our table, and had another couple of glasses of champagne. Maurice returned to our table about an hour later, a giant grin on his face.

“Garree, I ended up losing it all,” he said.

“Well, you certainly put on a show,” I replied.

“Always, Garree.”

“It was just five hundred pounds.”

“Sure, Garree. Sure.”

Both of us were unsteady on our feet from enjoying the non-stop very expensive champagne, Maurice decided to find David’s chauffeur to take us back to Flora’s. When a Rolls Royce pulled up, I was hardly surprised. Suddenly now anything and everything seemed possible.

Stumbling out of the Rolls Royce and up the stairs to Flora’s front door I felt like I was floating, high on the night’s events and beyond excited for the rest of our trip. If our first real night was like this, I couldn’t wait to see how the rest of our travels would unfold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outrageous, yes but Poignant!

Gary Orleck has scored a masterpiece in this one-of-a-kind story! I didn't want it to end, hungering for more in the home stretch. Gary is a superb raconteur, and the story itself is beyond anything imaginable. Besides the entertaining glamour, shock, humor and terror of the events, is the profound sensitivity, tenderness and wisdom of the author. Expecting only a sort of raucous ride through the pages, Travels with Maurice weaves in humanity, humility, morality, faith and love. Wherever you're dashing off to for holiday, this is what you want for a memorable summer read. Trust me!

Author Biography:

In 1965, Gary Orleck graduated from Babson College—a small but outstanding business college with students from around the world—in Wellesley, Massachusetts and set out along Route 66 working his way around the US for four months. Most helpful was an agreement he had with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company that he could work in any store during his travels, but he could not be paid locally. Instead, his pay was sent to his home later. Gary was well-versed in the tire business because his father owned the largest Goodyear Tire and Service store in New England.

For a young boy from Rhode Island, this was a life-changing experience. Gary was present for the Watts Riots and the world premiere of Fantastic Voyage with Raquel Welch and Fernando Lamas at Grumman’s Chinese Theater. He arrived in San Francisco the day topless was approved. The four-month trip wet Gary’s appetite for more traveling. While driving home from California, he made a promise to himself: to drive around all of Europe the next year.

Gary bumped into a college student who graduated with him. The student was from Iran, a country most Americans had never heard of at the time. Gary didn’t know it at the time, but his friend was from the wealthiest family in the world at that time. His friend had lived in Switzerland for four years of boarding school, four years of college in London, and seven summers in the South of France for summer school. He asked Gary to join him that following summer to drive through Europe—his friend offering to be his tour guide since he knew Europe like the back of his hand.

At first, Gary was hesitant because of his friend’s perceived reputation, but he was very persuasive, promising to be the best tour guide ever. Reluctantly, Gary agreed which led to the most mind-blowing experience—a ten-week trip through 12 countries and 19,920 miles of earth-shattering adventures that include turning a ship around in the middle of an ocean, dining with the King and Queen of Denmark and the King and Queen of Belgium, meeting The Who backstage, being entertained by the Empress of Iran-Empress Farah in Paris, gambling with the Shah of Iran in Monte Carlo, and even being rescued out of handcuffs by Shirley Temple Black after being arrested during the Czechoslovakian Revolution in the summer of 1968.

Gary says, “It took ten years for me to process that trip—five years of research plus five years of writing—because I wished to share with the world the greatest adventure a young naïve boy from Rhode Island could ever imagine happening. So, fasten your seat belts for a ride inside the elite world of the rich and famous and join me on a trip of a lifetime. A trip you will never forget. I promise you that.
