While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

Excerpt

As I approached the buffet line, I heard a familiar voice call my name. I turned and came face-to-face with Leo Mulligan and Jim Nelson, an odd couple, and one I didn’t expect to encounter in any environment.

What was Jim doing in Parry Sound? And what had he shared with Leo? I thought back to my suspicions about Leo and what I had shared with Jim last night. And then I relaxed. I was paying Jim to investigate, and he would behave professionally.

Both men laughed. Jim shook a finger at me. “We’ve got to stop meeting like this.” In the past, I had often gone to his office early in the morning to discuss our cases. He had once referred to it as our time.

Leo’s eyes widened. “Am I missing something here?”

I laughed, and Jim joined in. The thought of us as an item was hilarious.

Jim put a finger to his lips. “Ssh! These walls might have ears, and the news could travel across the Prairie Provinces to the Rockies.”

Leo groaned. “Just what I need right now...another call from Chief Detective Carlo Fantin.” Leo’s eyes narrowed. “You might have mentioned you were involved with him and that he was keeping tabs on this case.”

“What?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Jim shook his head. “Your boyfriend was busy last night. He called Leo first and then me.”

“What on earth for?” I imagined he had reprimanded Leo but what would compel him to call Jim? The two men had not spoken to each other in decades. In fact, Jim could never call Carlo by his first name. It was always “your boyfriend” or “the Chief Detective.” And whenever Carlo needed something from Jim, he would send a constable.

Leo raised an eyebrow at me. “I didn’t know Fantin was your significant other.”

Another person who couldn’t address Carlo by his first name. But then Carlo also used Leo’s surname. It must be a guy thing.

“He thinks you need extra protection,” Jim explained. “We’ve been instructed to keep a close eye on you.”

“And not let you out of our sights until you leave Parry Sound,” Leo added.

“That’s ridiculous!” I wasn’t in any danger. I was annoyed by the lack of progress with the séances and distrustful of both Jake and Leo. I tried but couldn’t recall if I had communicated my feelings about Leo to Carlo. And then realized I had not. But I had shared those feelings with Jim.

Leo’s fingers drummed the side of his coffee cup. “I don’t know what you told Fantin, but he’s convinced you’re in some kind of danger. He thinks you’re getting too close.”

“I have to agree,” Jim muttered. “Did you bring the yearbook?”

“Ah, yes the yearbook.” Leo’s voice was stern. “You know better than to conceal evidence from the police.” He chuckled. “I gather you didn’t share that tidbit with Fantin.”
