Excerpt:

Shrugging into her coat, Ella was hit by a draught of icy cold air. It had started snowing heavily, and the ground was covered in a beautiful layer of soft white, reflecting in the glow of the old-fashioned streetlamps on Front Street. They turned the corner, with the village green laid out before them, a perfect square of white like the icing on a Christmas cake, when a blast of icy wind knocked Ella backwards slightly. Without a word, Neil took her hand and placed it in the crook of his arm. It nestled cosily, and Ella felt a warmth that spread from that limb throughout her entire body.

‘Nearly there!’ he shouted above the roar of the weather.

To be honest, at this point, Ella would have followed Neil anywhere. Hugging close to his side, the village idyllic in its wintery attire, she was the happiest she had been in a long time.

They reached the vet surgery, and Neil produced a fat, overladen keyring from his coat pocket. They walked down the side of the old building, and in through the back door.

The warmth hit them, as if they were stepping out of the airport on a summer holiday.

‘We need to keep the temperature up for our patients!’ Nick laughed, as Ella quickly removed her coat before she began to melt. ‘I needed to check on Buster here, and I thought you might like to meet him.’

Neil bent down to one of the cages and brought out the cutest black Labrador puppy that Ella had ever seen. One of his legs was in a blue cast.

‘Buster here thought he’d try going for a walk by himself, in the traffic,’ Neil explained, shaking his head. He’s lucky it was just Doc Jeffries on his pedal bike and not the farmer’s tractor!’

He handed the eager puppy to Ella. His injury didn’t seem to have dimmed his enthusiasm, and he began covering her in excited kisses. Ella laughed, caught up in the moment. She looked up at Neil, and the look in his eyes was unmistakable. Gently lifting the puppy back into his cage, Nick was equally cautious as he stroked Ella’s cheek with his fingers. Ella dipped her head into his palm, and they stood there looking at each other, as time stood still.
