Title: Flight of the Raven
Author: Judith Sterling
Genre: Medieval Romance
How eager would the bridegroom be if he knew he could never bed the bride?
Lady Emma of Ravenwood Keep is prepared to give Sir William l’Orage land, wealth, and her hand in marriage. But her virginity? Not unless he loves her. The curse that claimed her mother is clear: unless a Ravenwood heir is conceived in love, the mother will die in childbirth. Emma is determined to dodge the curse. Then William arrives, brandishing raw sensuality which dares her to explore her own.
William the Storm isn’t a man to be gainsaid. He’ll give her protection, loyalty, and as much tenderness as he can muster. But malignant memories quell the mere thought of love. To him, the curse is codswallop. He plans a seduction to breach Emma’s fears and raze her objections. What follows is a test of wills and an affirmation of the power of love.
If you had the choice between celibacy and death, which path would you choose? For Lady Emma, the choice is simple: celibacy. Every woman in her family has died in childbirth thanks to the Ravenwood curse. Unless an heir is conceived in love, the woman will die in childbirth. All is going according to plan, that is, until William the Storm arrives to claim what is rightfully his.
William the Storm is a fierce warrior and when he arrives at Ravenwood, he’s ready to be all things to Emma and Ravenwood. But on the wedding night, his wife rejects him in name of the curse. He’s furious until he concocts a plan to seduce her. He sees passion in his wife’s eyes and he knows just how to release it. But when her life’s in danger, will William admit to himself and her he loves her or will it be too late?
I’m a big fan of medieval romance and in Flight of the Raven, both Emma and William are being chased by ghosts from the past. They’re strangers at first but the more they’re around each other, the clearer it becomes they’re two birds of a feather. Can love heal their wounds and bind them together or are they destined to be lonely forever?
A curse and a betrayal of a close friend to Ravenwood brings plenty of mystery and intrigue to this historical romance. I couldn’t stop reading until the conclusion. The romance, while sweet at first, soon leads to some very hot love scenes. The best part, though, had to be the historical background. Sterling brings medieval England to life and I loved every minute of it. Highly recommend and can’t wait to read the second book in the series.
Favorite Character/Quote: “She wrapped her delicate fingers around a thick, stone pestle. The action did nothing to ease his condition. He had to make conversation, or he’d have his bride on the table faster than a Turk wielded a scimitar.”
